Since the ban of 1S-LSD and 1SB-LSD, interested eyes from the psychonaut community have been focused on 1Fe-LSD. For many, the most important question is: Is 1Fe-LSD legal in Germany?

As 1Fe-LSD is the latest generation of LSD derivatives, its legal classification in the Federal Republic of Germany is currently not yet definitively clarified and exists in a legal grey area.

The legal regulations for handling research chemicals are subject to continuous change, which is why not every newly emerging substance automatically falls under the Narcotics Act or the New Psychoactive Substances Act. The Medicinal Products Act also generally does not cover such substances (immediately).

This article provides an overview of the current legal status of 1Fe-LSD and outlines the legal aspects that need to be considered when dealing with this LSD analogue in one's own research.

BtMG, NpSG, AMG – Which law applies to an LSD derivative? What does the BtMG regulate?

What does the BtMG regulate?

The Narcotics Act (Betäubungsmittelgesetz - BtMG), as its name suggests, regulates the handling of narcotics; this includes, in addition to numerous drugs, certain medicines and plants. It thus regulates the manufacture, possession, trade, dispensing and prescribing of substances relevant under narcotics law.

This classification serves the purpose of curbing the abuse of these substances and determining which substances are prohibited, marketable, or prescribable. In this way, public health is to be protected without restricting the medically indicated use of certain active ingredients.

Violations of the Narcotics Act can, depending on the extent of the offense, be classified as an administrative offense or a criminal offense and lead to legal sanctions. [1]

What does the NpSG regulate?

The New Psychoactive Substances Act (NpSG) was enacted in Germany in 2016 to be able to react quickly to the dynamic market of legal highs and its ever-new substances. The legislator's goal was to close existing gaps in narcotics law and to regulate new psychoactive substances more quickly without having to ban each individual substance separately.

For this purpose, entire substance groups are included in special annexes to the NpSG, which can be continuously adapted. The respective ministry and subordinate expert authorities, who monitor and evaluate developments on the drug market, are responsible for these adaptations. The NpSG is therefore a central instrument of German drug policy for the Federal Ministry of Health to react flexibly to new trends and substances. [2, 3]

What does the AMG regulate?

The Medicinal Products Act (AMG) forms the central legal framework for the handling of medicinal products in Germany: from development, manufacturing and approval to dispensing and prescription requirements for medicinal products.

The law focuses on protecting the health of humans and animals. Binding regulations are intended to ensure that medicinal products comply with certain quality standards, are effective, and do not pose unacceptable risks.

In addition, the AMG regulates the conditions under which medicinal products may be placed on the market and the responsibilities of manufacturers, wholesalers, pharmacies, and other parties involved. Aspects such as prescription and pharmacy requirements, as well as official supervision, are also clearly defined in the Medicinal Products Act. The aim is to protect consumers from ineffective, incorrectly dosed, counterfeit, or potentially dangerous medicinal products. [4]

What applies to 1Fe-LSD?

1Fe-LSD is currently not subject to the Narcotics Act, the NpSG, or the Medicinal Products Act in Germany. This means that, according to current legal provisions (02/2026), the acquisition, possession, sale, and shipment of 1Fe-LSD are not punishable offenses.

This is made possible by a special synthesis in which a ferrocene side chain is attached to the indole ring of the LSD basic structure. This trick from the chemist's toolbox ensures that the resulting products, i.e., 1Fe-LSD, are not prohibited under current law.

However, the research chemical is not suitable for human consumption, as it has no food approval and has not been tested accordingly.

1Fe-LSD: A successor to already banned LSD analogues?

1Fe-LSD is, alongside 1BP-LSD, the currently legally available LSD analogue. It has now replaced LSD alternatives such as 1B-LSD, 1P-LSD, 1D-LSD or 1S-LSD, which are now covered by the NpSG and thus banned, and which were very popular in the psychonautic community in the past due to their LSD-like effects.

Like many LSD derivatives before it, 1Fe-LSD also appears to be a prodrug of the base substance lysergic acid diethylamide. Based on this prodrug concept, 1Fe-LSD could be used for similar research purposes as the now banned LSD derivatives of the past.

However, it is important to remember that due to the novelty of the substance, there is currently no reliable scientific data on its safety, potential risks and side effects, long-term effects, or safe dosages of 1Fe-LSD. Anyone planning to use the research chemical in their own research should do so with due respect, responsibility, and in compliance with known safer-use guidelines.

Since numerous aspects surrounding the LSD derivative 1Fe-LSD are currently still unclear, experience reports and assessments from the psychonaut community represent far more than mere guidance. They provide important information and complement the overall picture of the substance with valuable insights that can contribute to a better understanding.

A Cat-and-Mouse Game: The Legal Situation in Germany

The continuous adjustments to the NpSG (New Psychoactive Substances Act) and the subsequent emergence of new LSD derivatives strongly resemble an ongoing race between legislators and the psychedelic scene. As soon as an existing LSD variant is legally classified, processes for developing new, still legally permissible alternatives are already underway in specialized laboratories.

In the course of this dynamic, through the work of experienced chemists, 1BP-LSD and 1Fe-LSD were introduced at the end of 2025. According to the current status (02/2026), both substances are not explicitly listed in the New Psychoactive Substances Act, the Medicines Act, or the Narcotics Act, and are therefore currently considered legal.
Accordingly, the trade, shipment, and possession of these LSD derivatives in Germany are currently not punishable within a grey area. However, these research chemicals are explicitly not intended for human consumption or therapeutic purposes and do not have corresponding approvals or tests.

Furthermore, it should be considered that the legislator always has the possibility to amend the NpSG through a new regulation and thus spontaneously ban 1Fe-LSD. Whether and when such a legal change will occur cannot be conclusively assessed at present. However, interested parties should keep an eye on the legal situation so as not to miss an impending ban.

Conclusion

Currently, it can be stated that 1Fe-LSD is legally in an ambiguously regulated area and is legally available in Germany according to current law.

The substance is not yet explicitly covered by the Narcotics Act, the Medicines Act, or the NpSG, which makes it particularly interesting for numerous researchers and interested parties.

At the same time, the bans on earlier LSD derivatives such as 1D-LSD or 1cP-LSD show that such legal frameworks can be changed at any time by legislative measures. What is legal today can be banned tomorrow.

Against this background, it is advisable for individuals dealing with 1Fe-LSD to keep an eye on the constantly changing legal situation and to exercise responsible handling.

1Fe-LSD, like other LSD derivatives before it, illustrates the permanent race between the development of novel substances and a drug policy that attempts to adapt its regulations in a timely manner.
