1BP-LSD has been attracting a lot of attention in the psychonaut community since the ban of 1S-LSD and 1SB-LSD. One of the most frequently asked questions is: Is 1BP-LSD legal in Germany?

As 1BP-LSD is a novel research chemical, its legal status in Germany is currently in a grey area.

The legal situation surrounding research chemicals is constantly changing, and not every substance is automatically covered by the Narcotics Act or the NpSG. There is often uncertainty about what is permitted for one's own research, what restrictions exist, and what behavior could cause problems.

This article provides an overview of the current legal situation regarding 1BP-LSD and explains what you should legally consider if you want to delve deeper into this substance.

Happy reading!

Note: 1BP-LSD is not intended for human consumption. All described content is based on scientific sources or subjective experience reports and is not to be understood as instructions or recommendations.

NpSG, BtMG, AMG – What actually applies to research chemicals like 1BP-LSD?

What is the NpSG?

The so-called New Psychoactive Substances Act (NpSG) was enacted in Germany in 2016 to promptly respond to the dynamic market for "legal highs" and its ever-new substances. The legislator's goal was to close existing loopholes in narcotics law and to be able to regulate new psychoactive substances more quickly, without having to ban each individual substance separately.

For this purpose, entire substance groups are included in special annexes to the NpSG, which can be continuously adapted. The respective ministry and subordinate specialist authorities, which observe and evaluate developments in the drug market, are responsible for these adaptations. The NpSG is thus a central instrument of German drug policy to react flexibly to new trends and substances.

What is the BtMG?

The so-called Narcotics Act (Betäubungsmittelgesetz) regulates the handling of certain substances (narcotics). It aims to curb the abuse of drugs and medicines and specifies which substances are prohibited, marketable, or prescribable. This includes, among other things, the production, possession, trade, dispensing, and prescription of substances relevant under narcotics law.

The aim of the law is to protect public health while also enabling the medically sound use of certain active ingredients under clear conditions. Violations of the BtMG can be prosecuted as a minor offense or a criminal offense, depending on the severity, and can result in severe penalties.

What is the AMG?

The Medicines Act (Arzneimittelgesetz - AMG) regulates the trade in medicinal products in Germany and forms the legal basis for their manufacture, approval, and dispensing.

It primarily serves to protect the health of humans and animals by ensuring the quality, efficacy, and safety of medicines.

The AMG specifies the conditions under which medicinal products may be brought onto the market and what obligations manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies must comply with. Questions regarding prescription requirements, pharmacy-only status, and supervision by authorities are also clearly regulated in the Medicines Act. The aim is to protect patients from ineffective, falsified, or unsafe medicines.

What specifically applies to 1BP-LSD?

1BP-LSD is currently not covered by the AMG, NpSG, or the Narcotics Act in Germany. This means that, as of the current status (01/2026), 1BP-LSD can be legally acquired in this country. The possession, sale, and shipping of the substance are not punishable.

1BP-LSD as a successor to already banned LSD analogues?

1BP-LSD is the currently available, legal successor to numerous previous LSD derivatives like 1CP-LSD, 1V-LSD, or 1S-LSD.

This new LSD alternative also appears to be a prodrug to the basic substance LSD-25 and could potentially be used for similar research projects as its now illegal predecessors.

It is important to consider, however, that there is currently no reliable study data on the safety, possible risks, unwanted effects, long-term effects, and appropriate dosages of 1BP-LSD. Anyone wishing to use the substance for their own research should do so with the necessary respect, responsibility, and in compliance with common safer use rules.

Because there are currently still many open questions regarding the LSD derivative 1BP-LSD, experience reports and feedback from the psychedelic community are not only helpful guides but also valuable puzzle pieces that contribute to a deeper understanding of the substance.

A cat-and-mouse game: The legal situation in Germany

The updates to the NpSG and the subsequent development of new LSD derivatives resemble a cat-and-mouse game between legislators and the psychedelic community: As soon as an LSD alternative is covered by the ban, laboratories begin the development and production of new, legal LSD alternatives.

Currently, thanks to the efforts of capable chemists, 1BP-LSD and 1Fe-LSD have been brought to market, both of which are currently (as of 01/2026) not covered by the NpSG, the Medicinal Products Act, or the Narcotics Act, and are therefore legal.

This means that the trade, shipping, and possession of these LSD derivatives are currently permitted in Germany. However, the research chemicals are explicitly not intended for human consumption or therapeutic purposes.

Important to know: The German government could theoretically initiate an amendment to the NpSG at any time, which could ban 1BP-LSD within a very short period. When and if this will happen is currently still unclear.

Conclusion

In summary, 1BP-LSD currently operates in a legal grey area, making it legally available in Germany under current regulations. Neither the BtMG, the AMG, nor the NpSG explicitly cover the substance at present, which makes it particularly interesting for many researchers and interested parties. At the same time, a look at earlier LSD derivatives such as 1D-LSD or 1P-LSD shows how quickly this initial situation can change due to legal adjustments.

Anyone dealing with 1BP-LSD should therefore closely monitor the dynamic legal situation and always act responsibly. Ultimately, 1BP-LSD once again highlights the ongoing tension between innovative substance development and a drug policy that tries to keep pace with new substances.
