LSD-25, developed by Albert Hofmann, has been used by hippies, artists, and thinkers to achieve altered states of consciousness and foster creativity. Iconic images of colorful paper squares on the tongue have become a symbol of LSD use.

Whether blotter paper, drops, or tablets – the method of intake plays a special role, even with highly potent psychedelics like 1BP-LSD.

Although the chemical effects in the body are similar, the forms of consumption differ significantly in handling, dosage, and potential risks.

Especially in the context of research chemicals, which circulate outside regulated markets as successors to banned drugs and are not intended for human consumption, a closer look at common consumption methods proves interesting.

This article provides a systematic overview of the most common methods of consuming LSD products such as 1BP-LSD, explains their peculiarities, and categorizes them objectively. It will become clear why not every form of consumption is equally practical or safe for LSD derivatives.

1. Overview of the most common forms of consumption

1.1 The Classic: Blotter Paper

By far the most common and iconic form of consumption for lysergic acid diethylamide and so far every LSD analog is the so-called blotter paper, or simply "blotter" in English. This form of administration is a direct and ingenious response to the extreme potency of the substance. Since an effective dose is in the microgram range, handling the pure crystalline substance would be impossible and extremely dangerous for the end user.

Blotters are sheets of absorbent paper, often printed with colorful, psychedelic, or pop-cultural motifs. These sheets are dipped into a solution containing the active ingredient and then dried. They are perforated into small squares, called "tabs" or "cards," each of which is supposed to contain a single dose.

Consumption usually occurs orally, with the tab typically held on or under the tongue for some time (sublingual absorption). This allows for rapid absorption of the active ingredient through the oral mucous membrane directly into the bloodstream, partially bypassing the so-called first-pass metabolism in the liver and potentially leading to a faster onset of action. Alternatively, the piece of paper can simply be swallowed.

The popularity of blotters as a medium has several reasons:

  • Dosability: It allows for portioning tiny amounts of active ingredient into manageable units.

  • Stability: The substance on dry paper is relatively well protected from light and air exposure.

  • Discretion: A small piece of paper is inconspicuous and easy to transport and conceal.

However, the seemingly standardized form of blotter sheets is deceptive, especially in the unregulated market for research chemicals. The actual amount of active ingredient per tab can vary greatly, and the distribution on the paper can be uneven, making precise dosing a gamble.

1.2 Drops

The substance can be dissolved in a liquid, usually alcohol or distilled water, and sold in small bottles with a dropper. Dosing is done by dropping the liquid onto a carrier, such as a sugar cube, or directly onto the tongue. This form carries a high risk of overdose, as the concentration of the solution is often unknown and an accidental extra drop can double the dose. On the other hand, a known solution is the basis for precise volumetric dosing.

1.3 Tablets, Pills, and Pellets

Tablets or microdots are very small, often colorful pills or pellets into which the active ingredient is pressed. They allow for precise dosing, provided that the stated active ingredient content per unit is correct.

Tablets are often offered in different dosages for high-dosing and microdosing.

2. Alternative Forms of Administration

Although blotters, drops, or pills are the dominant form for research chemicals like 1BP-LSD, other forms of consumption are known for LSD-25 that would theoretically be conceivable and applicable for all other LSD derivatives:

  • Gelatin squares (“Window Panes”): Another, rather rare form are thin, transparent gelatin squares containing the active ingredient.

  • Powder/Crystal: In the context of “Research Chemicals,” the pure substance is often sold as a crystalline powder, typically in milligram quantities. This form is explicitly intended for laboratory use and is extremely dangerous for direct consumption, as precise dosing without a microgram-accurate analytical balance and corresponding expertise is impossible. However, it serves as a starting material for the production of solutions for blotter sheets or volumetric dosing.

Other forms of consumption, such as the rectal administration of LSD ("plugging"), are described less frequently. Absorption through the intestinal mucosa allows for rapid resorption and can lead to more consistent plasma levels. An advantage is the lower gastrointestinal burden, as the stomach is bypassed. Disadvantages include difficult dose standardization, potential local irritation, and the lack of reliable clinical data on efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics compared to oral intake. Therefore, this application form is rarely documented in scientific literature and is not considered an established method.

Oral or sublingual absorption is by far the most common and best-studied method.

3. The Importance of Set, Setting & Integration

When taking 1BP-LSD, as with any LSD derivative such as 1D-LSD, 1S-LSD, 1V-LSD or 1CP-LSD, the most important factors for the course and effect of the experience or trip are the Set (internal attitude, psychological state, emotional condition) and the Setting (environment, atmosphere, social support).

Also important is the subsequent integration of the experiences to sustainably transfer the insights gained into everyday life.

Reflection should be used to recognize behavioral patterns, develop new perspectives, and consciously incorporate them into future actions. This maximizes positive effects and promotes long-term personal development.

These factors largely determine whether the experience is constructive or stressful ("bad trip").

In contrast, the specific method of consumption – whether as a pill, drops, or blotter – has little influence on the psychedelic effects, as long as the dosage is clear.

Thus, psychological preparation, environment, and post-trip processing are the key factors, while the form of application is only of secondary importance.

Summary and Conclusion

In summary, 1BP-LSD is primarily consumed via blotter paper, which allows for precise dosing of microscopic amounts of the active substance and offers discretion. In addition, liquid forms and tablets exist, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of dosage and handling.

Other forms of application, known from other drugs, are rather uncommon among consumers of legal LSD alternatives.

Regardless of the method of use, psychological preparation (set), environment (setting), and integration of experiences are crucial for a safe and positive experience. The form of administration is secondary, as long as the dosage is known and controllable.

It is also important to always consider the legal aspect: the New Psychoactive Substances Act (NpSG) does not currently (01/2026) include the legal LSD derivative 1BP-LSD, yet the product is not approved as a foodstuff or medicine. Interested parties should keep an eye on the law, as the legislator could ban 1BP-LSD at any time. Then, the distribution and manufacture of 1BP-LSD would become illegal.
